When you travel out of Norway, you can bring with you 18 kilos of fish that has been fished under the auspices of a registered tourist fishing camp, provided that the organized fishing can be documented. You must have caught the fish yourself.
The tourist fishing camp must be registered with the Directorate of Fisheries.
The export quota of 18 kilos applies per person, both Norwegians and foreigners, who are leaving Norway.
- The export quota must be carried personally upon departure
- You cannot bring fish for others who are not traveling with you.
- Trophy fish are part of the quota.
- The quota can be taken out of the country up to twice a year.
- The quota includes fish and processed products such as fillets or similar.
- This applies to all recreational fishing in Norway’s inland waters, territorial sea, and economic zone outside the Norwegian mainland, as long as it is not commercially oriented.
Documentation requirements for fish export
When bringing fish out of the country, you, as a traveller, must be able to document that the fish was caught through a registered tourist fishing camp.
As documentation that the fishing took place through a registered tourist fishing camp, the Norwegian Customs accepts documents containing the following information:
- The registered tourist fishing company’s name, address, and business registration number.
- Names of those who have fished under the company’s auspices.
- Duration of the stay.
- The individuals listed in the document must be present when the fish is exported from the country.
Exceptions
- Salmon, trout, char, and freshwater fish that you catch yourself.
- Fish or fish products purchased in Norway are not covered if it can be documented that they were bought from a registered business.
- Furthermore, fish caught from registered vessels and taken over from the vessel owner, documented by presenting a final sales note, are also not covered.
Value limit
You cannot export goods (including fish and fish products) with a value exceeding NOK 5000 per person without declaring them to customs before crossing the border. You must ensure that the goods are properly declared. Learn more about declaration
If the Norwegian Customs discovers attempts to export fish or fish products exceeding the legal quantity, all fish will be seized, and the matter will be reported to the police with a request for confiscation.
